Your Own Personal Oasis

It can be hard sometimes to find a place where you feel comfortable, safe and at peace. To take good care of ourselves, it is imperative that we find that home zone – our home within ourselves. The ambience of this space is set by the mindset we develop and the perspectives we carry. Whether or not its a real, physical place, is dependent on our current situation and the circumstances of our lives.

Some of us don’t have a personal space that isn’t shared with others. We could be sharing with our families, our siblings, our romantic partner(s), our friends or even strangers. Even so, or more so, having a space to ourselves becomes important and tending to that space, the most important activity we can perform in a day.

Tending to our home zone can happen in a variety of ways but at the core of them all is taking part in activities that nourish our being. Therefore, it can mean different things to different people. Anything that tames the chaos within our minds, makes our hearts happy, makes us more connected to our bodies and leaves us at least marginally better off, overall, is a candidate activity.

A hallmark of such activities is that our minds are calm, hearts are full and bodies are at ease when we do them. For me, painting, writing, journaling and walking with music plugged in are my go-tos.

The empowering thing about doing these activities is that we first get better at the activity each time we do it and second, our home zone is spruced up a little or a lot each time we take part in our favourite activities. That’s the other necessary condition – we have to enjoy it and derive joy from it. This may seem like a tall order, but in reality it becomes both challenging and deeply engaging to find these activities and become good enough at them that we walk away with all these benefits.

The home zone itself becomes our command central, instead of an escape, over time. To me, this is the biggest benefit. Each time I can pull myself together enough to act from this oasis of a command central, I do better than I have ever done before. My thoughts are cogent, my mind is clear, there’s a fire in my heart and I can sit comfortably for hours at an end. I can’t say enough about the magic of this place.

I think it’s good to uncover these activities for ourselves early, but now is soon enough. Good luck! Until next time, take care.
